Wireless control systems

You will find there's growing movement in your hoist sector towards wireless control systems which will ensure greater safety and also less downtime for staff, as well as intelligent devices that provide increased levels of generation data. Tom Woerndl studies.

The advent of wireless solutions within the last decade has seen both industrial and customer technology move towards ‘hands-free’ and many more portable products. At your domestic level, the features are clear, as such technology are available by individuals in the house to live more conveniently and flexibly.

Likewise, pertaining to operators of overhead cranes, wireless solutions—or as a minimum solutions with fewer wires—are now becoming more commonplace, with control systems intended for lifting equipment that work with radio frequencies providing loads of potential advantages.

Jim Kluck, global product manager for Magnetek-brand equipment and automation systems on Columbus McKinnon, a US-based rising and motion control specialist, confirms that the hoist sector is moving from the systems that require considerable wiring.

“There’s definitely been a push inside the last few years to be able to simplify controls and improve the look of wiring by, for instance, utilising a point I/O prohibit that transmits wired I/O by having a single Ethernet cable, and the Ethernet connections to driving and sensors.

“By reducing the quality of wiring, troubleshooting becomes less difficult for operators, who no longer must dig through several wires to find the situation. ”

One knock-on effect of fewer wires is reportedly reduced downtime, lower time costs and smaller section size. “There is also a cost benefit for operators, as they’ll be utilising less copper wiring with regard to inputs and outputs, ” gives Kluck, who says that crane users are increasingly using radio-controlled devices to stand further far from loads. “As a consequence, we are seeing progressively more demand for these kinds of systems with wireless connectivity, although operators still choose to have a pendant with regard to back-up. ”

Radio-controlled systems can also simplify and streamline operations by reducing the quantity of devices in a production environment that are liable to fail, while also decreasing the quality of technology that is more prone to suffer from wear plus tear.

Headquartered in Sweden, but with a bundle of international sites, Tele The airwaves recently supplied radio handle systems for 18 electric overhead travelling cranes with Nortek Air Solutions’s improved air handling equipment producing facility in Québec, Canada.

Tele Radio provided each and every crane with three Panther receivers: one for the bridge, one for hoist/trolley JUST ONE, and the third to get hoist/trolley 2.

All of the operations are controlled by the single transmitter, with the cranes utilized by Nortek to lift numerous loads— including custom ventilators, coils and air handlers—which are manufactured at the recently expanded 200, 000 sq foot facility in Montreal.

“A key benefit of our radio-controlled systems over traditional solutions is the fact that we’ve eliminated festooning, ” talks about Miguel Tellez, managing overseer at Tele Radio. “This means that no cables need to be installed to control the functions which have been handled by each free receiver.

“Consequently, the strategy is more cost-effective, because festooning can be quite expensive. In addition, having no cables means that there is no wear and tear using those cables. ”

According to Tellez, having just one transmitter for each crane also allows quick and easy part replacement should of break downs. “In a facility where you can find cranes, each with certainly one of our transmitters installed, a spare transmitter in the same family is known to replace a damaged you, ” he continues.

“So if you can find 50 cranes, one spare Tele Radio Panther transmitter enables you to replace a faulty method. With most of each of our main competitors, a spare transmitter should be used for every crane while in the facility. ”

Andreas Bahls, product sales manager at Tele The airwaves, adds that the Panther system is easy to create and operate, while this also benefits from working from 2. 4 GHz, which enables the application of hundreds of systems within the same area. “Our success with this sort of solution means that crane producers and operators now trust wireless systems for example these, ” he points out.

Bahls notes that the Panther system could be adapted to almost many standard overhead crane software, and one transmitter might operate four separate cranes separately, while multiple transmitters is usually allowed to communicate with the same receiver.

Installation of systems such as Panther is usually accomplished by the OEM or consumer, although Tele Radio provides assistance with special demands.

For the Nortek venture, Canadian Stahl CraneSystems rep CanStahl installed the 18 single-girder EOT cranes, 15 which work in tandem along with two hoists. In North america, indoor cranes are ordinarily fitted with wire string hoists but, in this instance, chain hoists were accustomed to lift loads in tandem operation which has no sideways movement of the hook.

A total of 30 new chain hoists that has a lifting capacity between A COUPLE OF, 000 and 5, 000kg were being installed; the spans from the bridge cranes are as much as 66 ft (20. 12m), with a lifting height of personal hoists between 19. 7 ft (6m) and 26. 2 ft (8m). Almost all cranes are fitted together with 12-button Tele Radio rural controls.

In general terminology, Tellez says the North U. s citizens market for control systems has changed significantly within the last two decades. “When I moved on the US from Spain 15 typical, it felt a minute like I was stepping last time, as remote controls was previously a luxury item, ” this individual explains.

“However, as the actual safety and reliability connected with remote controls improved, and the money necessary for high-end solutions came down, applications that require wire control have gradually disappeared. ”.
